Why this coast suits families

The Gulf of Fethiye behaves like a lake with sea temperature. Coves sit within 30 minutes of each other, the bottom holds, and nobody gets seasick on a 3-mile leg. That is the whole argument, and it is why most first family charters on this coast start from Gocek.

Dalaman Airport is 21 km from the Gocek marinas, about 25 minutes by road. Families land, get met, and are swimming the same afternoon. With small children that detail matters more than anything written in a brochure.

How the day runs

A family week finds its rhythm on day 2 and keeps it. Swim before 10, when the water is flat and the day boats are still in port. Move 30 to 45 minutes to the lunch cove. Afternoon in the water off the stern. Move again at 17:00 to the overnight bay. Dinner on deck or at a pontoon ashore.

That is 5 or 6 miles of actual cruising. It is enough. The mistake people make is booking a 10-night one-way route for a family of 4 and spending the week moving instead of swimming.

Ages change the yacht, not the route

Under 6. A catamaran. Two hulls means no heel, a flat trampoline forward that doubles as a playpen, and steps down to the water rather than a ladder. Netting on the guardrails is standard on request.

7 to 12. The toy locker decides the week. Ask what is actually aboard: a towable, 2 paddleboards, snorkel kit in children's sizes, and a tender with enough power to pull. Many yachts list toys and carry one deflated ring.

Teenagers. They need their own cabin and a working signal. A 20 m catamaran or a 25 m motor yacht gives both without putting the family on a superyacht budget.

Grandparents. Look at the passerelle and the companionway before anything else. A gulet or Motor Sailer with a wide, shallow stairway is worth more than an extra knot.

Where it works

Gocek for the first charter: the Twelve Islands, nothing over 40 minutes. Fethiye for a mix of swimming and shore days. Bodrum for families with older children who want towns in the evening. Marmaris for the sheltered run into Hisaronu and Bozburun.

Avoid the long one-way routes east to Kas with children under 10. The Lycian coast is steep-to and open, and the technique there is to anchor deep and run lines ashore. It is a better week with teenagers aboard.

What to ask us before you book

Whether the crew includes a dedicated hostess, what the galley will do about fussy eaters, and whether the mooring-buoy fees in the Gocek bays are inside or outside the rate. They are outside it. We put the number in the proposal rather than leaving it for the last morning.

Frequently asked questions

What age is too young for a yacht charter?

There isn't one, but under 3 the week is mostly about shade, naps and a flat deck. A catamaran in the Gocek bays is the setup that works. Open coast routes are not.

Do we need to be able to sail?

No. Every yacht in our charter fleet is crewed. You decide where to swim and when to eat; the captain handles the rest.

Can the kids sleep in their own cabin?

From about 16 m upward, yes. Below that, bunk arrangements vary a lot. Tell us the ages and we will match the layout rather than the length.

Is the water safe for children?

Sea temperature runs from 20°C in May to 28°C in August and stays above 24°C into October. The coves used for family charters are shallow, clear and sheltered. Crew brief on the tender and the swim ladder on day 1.
